Citrus Production, Part 1 Common Varieties

Calamondin – This is locally known as kalamansi. Its tree is small with upright branches. Its leaves are broadly oval, dark green on the upper surface and pale green underneath. Its fruits are small, ranging from 0.3 to 3.5 cm long and 3.8 to 4.5 cm in diameter. The juice is rich in phosphorous, calcium, iron and Vitamin C and helps prevent respiratory diseases. With its alkalinizing effect on the body, calamansi helps circulate blood evenly and facilitates normal digestion.

Mandarin – Its local names are sintones or dalanghita. The fruit is flattened and turns yellow or reddish orange when mature. The rind is loose and can be easily removed. Its popular varieties are Szinkom, Ladu, Batangas, Satsuma (seedless), Ponkan, and Clementine.

Sweet Orange – Locally called dalandan or kahel, it originated from China. Its fruit is usually medium-sized and spherical to slightly obovate. The skin is generally thick, rough and leathery. The varieties cultivated in the country are Hamlin, Perante, and Valencia.

Pummelo – It originated from the Malayan and East Indian archipelago. This is otherwise known as lukban or suha. Its tree is medium to large and spreading. The fruits are large, round to pear-shaped with thick and spongy rind. Its outstanding varieties include Amoy Mantan, Sweet Siamese, Red Chandler, Sunwi Luk, Chinese, Davao, and Magallanes.

Navel – Navels are sweet orange types which require more exact growing conditions and culture practices than other orange cultivars. The fruit is large, slightly oval toelongated shape, early color break, deep orange, juicy, rich flavor, has good sugar-acid ratio, and peels easily. Best varieties include Washington, Navelina, and Guillet.

Lime – This is locally known as dayap. Its tree is small and bears seedy small fruits with very thin and aromatic rind. Its flesh is juicy, thin and very acidic. Commercial products from lime are limeade, lime juice, and marmalade. Lime varieties include Bears, Tahiti, and Mexican.

Lemon – It is grown primarily for its acidic juice. The tree is medium-sized, elliptical to oblong with short neck or low collar at the base. The rind turns yellow when it ripens, its flesh is greenish yellow, tender and juicy. The best commercial varieties grown here are Eureka and Lisbon.
