How to Makle Kitchen Hangings from Resin

Kitchen hangings add color to the interior of the kitchen. Here you will make carrot and tomato kitchen hanging, but you can male practically any shape of your choice using a one-piece mold.

Tools and Materials:

  • Models of carrot and tomato
  • 500g Silicon rubber
  • 25g Catalyst
  • 4 squares of Gauze
  • Carton
  • Silicon rubber applicator (cotton swab glued to the end of a piece of wire)
  • Modeling clay
  • about 1.75kg Plaster of Paris
  • about 525g Water
  • 75g Dyes or paints (green, brown, orange, red)
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spatula
  • Paint brush

A. Making the One-piece Mold:

  1. Mix 250g silicon rubber and 12g catalyst
  2. Meanwhile, paste each tomato and carrot model in a piece of cardboard.
  3. Apply silicon rubber mixture to cover all surfaces of each model. Make sure every nook and cranny of the model is covered with the mixture. Blow away any bubbles using the plastic straw.
  4. Set aside for a few minutes to dry. Meanwhile, mix the remaining silicone rubber and catalyst.
  5. When the silicon rubber is moderately dry, apply the prepared mix for the second coating.
  6. Put squares of gauze over the molds and press with the spatula.
  7. Apply another layer of silicone mixture to the molds to strengthen.
  8. Let dry for 30 minutes.

B. Making the Support:

  1. Make lumps of modeling clay and place these around the molds like wall. Fill all corners and holes with clay. Pack well so the clay will stick to the mold properly.
  2. Mix 300g water and 1kg plaster of Paris in a mixing bowl. Mix well until viscous.
  3. Apply the mixture to the mold using a spatula. Level the top and sides. Let dry for 25 minutes.
  4. When dry, remove the support from the molds. Take out the clay.
  5. Peel off the molds from the carton. Wet the carton, so it will be easier to remove the mold. Trim off silicone rubber along the sides.
  6. Gradually tale out the carrot and tomato models. The molds are now completed.

C. Casting:

  1. Mix the remaining 225g water and 750g plaster of Paris in a mixing bowl. Stir well until viscous.
  2. Using the paint brush, apply the mixture to all surfaces of the mods.
  3. Pour the remaining plaster of Paris into the molds.
  4. Gently shake the molds to distribute the mixture evenly. Before the cast hardens, insert a wire hook at the back. Let dry for 25 minutes.
  5. Remove the mold from the support then slowly take out the cast from the mold.
  6. Scrape off excess cast with a small knife.
  7. The cast may now be painted as follows:
    • Green for the leaves of the carrot;
    • orange for the body;
    • brown for the bundle and small lines;
    • green to the leaves of the tomato;
    • red for the tomato itself.

Paint evenly. You now have carrot and tomato kitchen hangings.
